A concept of a prosumer member was first introduced in FairShares V3.2 in the Model Rules for a FairShares Commons Company, based on the practical work of Graham Boyd for UniOne Ltd. A prosumer is both a producer and consumer (user) of an enterprise's products and services at the same time. For example, people joining a renewable energy company may install equipment enabling them to both produce and consume energy concurrently. Similarly, in a food co-operative where members both produce and consumer the food growth would be prosumers.

The category of prosumer may also be useful for social media platforms where the content provides by 'users' (prosumers) is also the product of the site. It enables an energy to distinguish between those whose only role is the production of goods/services (without any consumption), those producing goods/services that they and others users, and those who only consume the goods/services of the enterprise without any role in production.

A FairShares Commons Company may only have prosumers, both prosumers and Labour Members, both prosumers and User Members, or all three categories (in addition to Founder Members and Investor Members.
